As most of you who follow me on twitter know (@ACirillo_21, give a follow), I am a Gary Sanchez truther. He is an average hitter, at best, and a catcher who can’t catch. I don’t know what you all think but I’m pretty sure those are the two most important parts in the game of baseball. I will say he has an exceptional pop time but you do have to catch the ball first before that becomes a factor.
Gary is off to a slow start at the plate this year, batting just .104 through 15 games (which is 25% of the season). Some would say that the guy "can't even hit his weight." Now to be fair to Gary, hes a bigger guy, so hitting his weight is a little more difficult than most. He is a big boned man weighing in at a little over 230 pounds. Which a .230 batting average would actually be an exceptional year by Sanchez standards.
Surprisingly "The Kraken" has actually only "hit his weight" 2 times in his almost 5 year career, batting .299 in 2016 and .278 in 2017. Which most would say, isn't very good. Yet most Yankee fans will tell you that this is a top 5 catcher in the league. Pretty crazy to say the guy is one of the best catchers in the league when he typically leads the league in past balls, cost the team more runs defensively than he saves them and has looked lost at the plate for the majority of the 2020 season.
What this has all made me realize is that if I have a son someday, I am going to make him a catcher because if you can't catch, can barely hit but can sprinkle in an occasional home run, you have a chance to be one of the best catchers in MLB.
My advice to Gary is do all you can to cut some weight for 2021, if he can do this, the theory of the guy not being able to hit his weight will significantly decrease. Like a wrestler trying to shed some pounds hours before a big match. All he has to do is go vegan until weigh-ins for the 2021 season and then he can eat as many cheeseburgers and hot dogs as he likes. I'm not a PR guy but this seems like a no brainer to me. What do you all think?
